About this tool
Work out the zakat due on your gold, silver, cash, bank balances, business stock, money owed to you and investments. Enter today's gold and silver rates and the calculator checks your net wealth against the nisab — 7.5 tola of gold or 52.5 tola of silver — and shows 2.5% of it as your zakat. It works in rupees, dirhams or any other currency.
How to use it
- Choose whether you weigh gold and silver in tola or grams, then enter how much you own and today's rate for each.
- Enter your cash and bank balances, goods held for sale, money owed to you and investments, all in the same currency.
- Enter debts and bills you must pay now, choose the nisab (silver or gold) and read the zakat due.
Good to know
- Zakat is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth, when that wealth is at or above the nisab and has been held for a full lunar (Hijri) year.
- Nisab = 7.5 tola (87.48 g) of gold or 52.5 tola (612.36 g) of silver, valued at today's rate.
- When wealth is a mix of cash, gold and other assets, many scholars advise the silver nisab because it is lower and so more cautious. You can switch to the gold nisab.
- Your home, car, household items and personal-use belongings are not counted.
- Debts due now are deducted before the nisab check.
- The calculator doesn't contain any gold or silver price — enter the rate you get from your jeweller or market.
A worked example
Suppose you have 400,000 in the bank, 2 tola of gold, business stock worth 200,000 and a supplier bill of 100,000 due now. With an example gold rate of 300,000 per tola, the gold is worth 600,000. Net zakatable wealth = 400,000 + 600,000 + 200,000 − 100,000 = 1,100,000.
Compare it with the nisab worked out from that day's silver or gold rate. If it is at or above the nisab, zakat = 2.5% × 1,100,000 = 27,500. The rates here are examples only — always enter the rates on the day you calculate.
What to count and what to leave out
Count: cash at home, bank and savings balances, gold and silver, goods you hold to sell, money people owe you that you expect to get back, and shares or funds. Leave out: the house you live in, your car, furniture, clothes and the tools or machines you use to run a business.
Many people choose a fixed Hijri date — often in Ramadan — and calculate their zakat on that date every year, valuing everything at that day's prices.
Frequently asked questions
How is zakat calculated?
Add up gold, silver, cash, bank balances, goods for sale, money owed to you and investments, subtract debts due now, and if the result is at or above the nisab, pay 2.5% of it.
What is the nisab in tola?
7.5 tola of gold (87.48 grams) or 52.5 tola of silver (612.36 grams). Multiply by today's rate to get the nisab in your currency.
Should I use the gold or silver nisab?
If you only own gold, the gold nisab applies. If your wealth is mixed — cash, savings, some gold — many scholars advise the silver nisab. Ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.
Is zakat due on jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ. In the Hanafi school, followed by most people in Pakistan, zakat is due on gold and silver jewellery, including jewellery that is worn. Other schools exempt jewellery in regular use.
Is zakat due on my house or car?
No. Your home, car and other things for personal use are not zakatable. Property or goods bought to sell are.
